Season 4 is good. Just rewatched Season 4 since the first time it aired, and it has honestly aged well. I remember not enjoying it at the time but looking back on it now it's a fine series. It's not Series 2, but it's not as bad as everyone has been making it out to be over the years. And, my God, Culverton Smith is an underrated character.
That episode worked well on both an emotional level and in how the story was told. If Sherlock was just a bunch of self contained mysteries without any season long arcs, it probably would have worked a lot better because Moffat is way better at self-contained mysteries than more longform arcs. 2. Basically she was a creepy version of River Tam from Firefly, and the dialog they gave to Mycroft to explain her intelligence was almost lifted directly from Simon Tam from the first episode of Firefly. Again, this show is worth watching because the two lead actors are so incredible. But the writing has gotten really, really bad.
